tweaking macos for 1080p external display

After buying 1080p monitor, I’m not happy to use with my mac due to poor text clarity. So, I tried many ways work around. On macOS Tahoe, the recommended and supported way to control font smoothing is to use the following command in Terminal:

defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int [value]

Where [value] can be:

  • 0 (off)
  • 1 (light)
  • 2 (medium, default)
  • 3 (strong).

To check if font smoothing is enabled on macOS, use this Terminal command:

defaults -currentHost read -g AppleFontSmoothing
  • A value of 0 means font smoothing is disabled.
  • Values 1, 2, or 3 mean font smoothing is enabled (with strength increasing from light to strong).

If the setting is not present, macOS defaults to medium smoothing (2), which is the standard for most users unless actively changed. After changing, log out or reboot to see the effect. Visual changes may be subtle, especially on high-DPI/Retina displays, but on non-Retina monitors, fonts typically appear bolder/smoother when enabled.
